OZ MINERALS: SEEKING SUPPLIERS FOR A PRECIOUS MINEThe Oz Minerals copper-gold mine, Prominent Hill, has the capacity to produce up to 120,000 tonnes of copper and 100,000 ounces of gold concentrates per annum for over 10 years with the product being exported to Asia and Europe. The $1.15 billion project needed locally based, cost competitive, skilled contractors and suppliers to assist in construction and the ongoing provision of products and services. ICNSA helped identify potential suppliers capable of supplying the project.
A GOLDMINE FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIAN COMPANIES
Oz Minerals was a relatively new company to South Australia and needed to forge links with local industry. ICNSA contacted Oz Minerals to offer its help in identifying potential suppliers and support through the tendering process. ICNSA promoted the tender opportunities on a dedicated web portal where suppliers could register for the project. It then provided Oz Minerals a shortlist of companies that best met the project criteria and outlined each candidate’s experience and capabilities. As a result, local companies won more than 50 per cent of available contracts, with a combined value of more than $400 million, to build the process plant and infrastructure.
PRECIOUS CONNECTIONS A close working relationship between the Prominent Hill procurement manager and ICNSA led to positive outcomes for the project and local suppliers, including significant savings in time and money. “ICNSA is committed to the cause (of connecting major projects to local industry) and as such is trustworthy and reliable. A partnership with the ICNSA would be a positive step for any new mining project in South Australia.”
Mick Wilkes, Executive General Manager Operations, Oz Minerals.
